Some of the most common questions I receive before a shoot are about what to wear- how certain colors will look on camera, whether or not white will show up on a white background (it does and looks great in my humble opinion!), and which tones work best in the studio. The good news is, it's much simpler than it seems!
The best studio outfits are simple, timeless, and photograph beautifully without pulling attention away from your connection as a family. Neutral tones, comfortable fits, and intentional coordination will always create the most flattering and cohesive images.
Below are my top two suggestions to help you feel confident and prepared for your studio session.
- Coordinate without matching: Pull in colors that all go together without dressing the whole family in one specific color. There are a few exceptions- see the cute denim boys at the top of this post!
- Skip bold patterns and logos: If you are wearing a bold logo or team colors, it will take away from you as the subject and the focus will be on the Clemson paw on your shirt (go tigers).
- Ultimately, there is flexibility here- these are your pictures where your personality will shine. These are not rules, just suggestions if you're not sure where to start! Decide what color scheme works best for your family and run with it! I've seen bright and bold colors show up well in the studio and I've seen a white/light color palette look timeless against a white studio backdrop.
Remember: these are your photographs, and the goal is for your faces and connection to be what’s remembered, not the clothes you wore! Wear what you feel best in and what colors you love!
